Sabbath Observance
Vs. Infanticide
by Nic Samojluk
Introduction
I want to share with you a letter I wrote to the Adventist Review following the publication of an article entitled, “The Sabbath and Public Life.”Dear Editor,
I read with great interest your latest editorial entitled "The Sabbath and Public Life" in the September 14, 2000 issue of the Adventist Review because, coming from the Sancta Sanctorum of the Adventist media, it represents an impressive vignette of SDA reporting. Our church has valiantly stood in defense of Sabbath observance for nearly two centuries, and I believe that we must continue in this fine Adventist tradition. The Good Book states that the Sabbath is a sign pointing to the fact that we belong to God.
Nevertheless, the most elaborate sign is useless if what it points at is not behind the sign. If an ambulance driver, for example, sees a conspicuously placed sign reading "Hospital Emergency," but there is no hospital behind the sign, the patient he is carrying may die for lack of medical care. The Sabbath is a sign pointing to God and to what he requires from us as expressed through the other nine Commandments. We have done quite well as a church in preserving the Sabbath sign in good condition of repair. How about some of the other Commandments?
I am thinking especially of the one that reads "You shall not murder." Right now infanticide is being practiced and tolerated in our country, and this has been reported in the news recently. George Will, for example, had a recent article in "Newsweek" describing how born alive babies are routinely left to die without medical attention at a Chicago hospital for the simple reason that the mother had requested an abortion which failed to kill the innocent creature. Some congressmen and senators are trying to do something to stop this horrible genocide, and non-Adventist media organizations are soliciting the support of the public in order to put pressure on Congress to act in behalf of the innocent victims.
My question is: Why is it that we Adventists are totally oblivious to this tragedy? I have been waiting for two decades for my church to wake up and raise its voice against the killing of the unborn. Now the fully born are perishing too, and nobody among our "Remnant" people is interested in doing anything about this tragedy. Yet, no sooner the Sabbath keeping of Joe Lieberman becomes a news item, we jump on the wagon. Did not our Lord tell us that "The Sabbath was made for mankind, and not mankind for the Sabbath"? Aren't those born alive, and even the unborn, members of mankind?
Recently La Sierra University Professor Fritz Guy, in his book "Thinking Theologically," (p. 236) made reference to the fact that when Hitler engaged in his "Final Solution," our church, together with the rest of Christendom, opted to remain silent. Now we are repeating our forefather's mistake while another genocide is taking place! Isn't it time that we learn from history? How can we dare to continue labeling ourselves "The Remnant Church" who keep God's Commandments, if we devote most of our energy and financial resources to preserve the sanctity of the Sabbath, while we turn a blind eye to the sanctity of Life itself? As a church we have done so much to help smokers quit a habit that shortens their life span, yet we will do nothing about those doomed to destruction prior to and even after they are fully born! Can you explain this obvious inconsistency?
May the good Lord bless you and the church under your care!
Is Abortion Less Offensive to God than
Sabbath Breaking?
by Nic Samojluk
I want to post here material I wrote for another forum two years ago, but which is as relevant today as it was then:
Millions have perished in our own land for the crime of being unborn. It is estimated that approximately forty-five million unborn babies have been either poisoned or butchered by physicians who were trained to save lives, but who, for profit sake, engage in the business of summarily executing those innocent babies waiting to have the rare chance of taking their first breath.
This is another topic where we, Seventh-day Adventists, have chosen to remain silent while the genocide is taking place. We have plenty of printed space to talk about the importance of worshipping God on the correct day of the week, but we have no interest in raising our voices in condemnation of the slaughter of the innocent in our own land. Every weekend, over three thousand unborn babies are sacrificed for the sake of convenience, and those criminal abortionists do this again and again with impunity.
If we as a nation and as a church continue to remain silent, I believe that the 9/11 event will be followed by other terrible calamities, which will dwarf what happened in New York. God cannot forever remain silent and continue to protect our nation, if we remain silent while those destined to the slaughter house go to their death and perish before they have a chance to see the light of day.
This does not surprise me, since historically, we have been more concerned about the sacredness of holy time than human life. The same thing happened when Hitler began his genocidal program against the Jews. We SDA's turned a blind eye to the plight of the innocent. We were more concerned about making sure Christians were warned about the dangers of worshipping God on the wrong day of the week.
We have championed many good causes. One of them is our concern for the health of those who had the great privilege of being allowed to be born. We have invested our precious resources in our efforts to help those eager to stop smoking, for example. Why? Because, by doing so, we can add about five years to their life. We are blind to see that, by saving the unborn from a sure death, we could add not merely five years to the life of human beings, but an entire life span.
We think that by keeping the Sabbath Day Holy, we are rendering a great service to humanity, forgetting that Jesus stated that the Sabbath was made for the sake of man, and not the other way around. We also forget that the Sabbath is a sign, a mere sign. Signs are important. The sign that reads Emergency in front of a hospital is a big help in guiding ambulances to the place where help is available. Nevertheless, if there is no hospital behind the sign staffed with trained physicians and nurses to render vital help, the sign turns into a dangerous distraction which can cost the life of the patient on the verge of death.
This is where we fail. Physicians who have been trained to save lives, devote their entire energy and know how, not to save the lives of those destined to perish; but rather, for the sake of profit, engage in the art of killing, instead of the art of healing; and we, the people who claim to have the last message of hope for a perishing world, prefer to remain silent while the genocide of the unborn continues unabated. I do not know if you are aware that one of the most prosperous abortionists in California, who owns over twenty abortion clinics, is a graduate from Loma Linda University.
Some time ago, I stopped at the White Estate section of the Loma Linda University library, and checked the list of printed material we have been publishing on the subject connected with the Sabbath. We have spent tons of ink in our efforts to convince the rest of Christians about the need to worship God on the correct day of the week. Then I looked for what we were doing in defense of those being poisoned and butchered inside the womb, the modern torture chamber of humanity. What did I find? Nothing! Zero! This shows very clearly where our interest is. We proclaim that prenatal human life is a magnificent gift of God which should be protected, and then admit that the the church has chosen not to define the precise moment human life begins. I can't understand this! How can we expect our physicians to protect prenatal human life if we affirm that we do not know when human life begins!
The Pope, whom we have demonized and labelled as the Beast of Revelation knows when human life begins. And yet we, the Remnant church of God don't. Beasts of prey kill the innocent and defenseless. Isn't this what abortionists are doing? Isn't that the true image of the beast? Doesn't this sound like an anomaly to you? We have labelled the one who is more determined than anybody else in the world to protect the innocent as the Beast. I think that our SDA eyes need to be examined. We have lost our 20/20 vision. How I wish somebody would come to the rescue of those destined to perish.
It is true that in ages past the Catholic church persecuted, tortured, and killed many Christian, whom Rome labelled as heretics. There is no way of denying what the Catholic Church did through the notorious Inquisition. Nevertheless, should we judge Rome on the basis of what the church did centuries ago, or rather on what the Pope is doing in defense of the defenseles? Should we ignore what Mother Theresa did for the helples, and what she did for the unborn?
I don't think we can! Credit should be given where credit is due! Shouln't we join John Paul II in his tireless effort to protect those who have no legal defense in this land of freedom: Freedom that is restricted for those lucky to have been allowed to be born.
This is what I wrote two years ago for another forum. Do I still believe what I wrote then? Of course I do. Nevertheless, I must admit that there has been a faint effort by some or our church's communications channels, as well by some independent ministries to correct this silence about abortion. A good example is the recent reprinting by the Adventist Review of an article dealing with this controversial issue.

The Beginning of Human Lifeby Nic SamojlukIn connection with this topic, I want to cite my response to an article published in the Autumn 2002 edition of Spectrum entitled "Current Creation Questions," in which the authors deal with the "Beginning of Human Life."
After reading the article authored by Zuccarelli and Winslow in your latest issue, I must commend you for reopening the dialogue about the beginning of human life. The authors cite in their article the argument that until day fourteen of human development, science is unable to ascertain individuality and personhood, since there is the possibility "for the embryo to split into two or more monozygotic offsprings."
The implication seems to be that there is no need to protect the embryo before day 14 of gestation, since we are not sure if we are dealing with one or more individuals. My question to them is: Are two human lives of less value than one? Is the life of identical twins less valuable than that of a single individual? Do we refuse to render emergency services to a woman if we are not sure if we are dealing with one or two human lives.
The woman might be pregnant, or pregnant with twins. Do we first ascertain the number of victims we are dealing before providing our rescue effort. If miners are trapped, do we refuse to render emergency services until we can ascertain the exact number of miners in trouble? Does the presence of a gray area morally justify our indifference towards human life?
On august 7,2001, Bettina Krause, the SDA editor of the Adventist News Network, cited Winslow as saying that "the church has chosen not to define the precise moment human life begins," but that "prenatal life ... should be protected." How can we effectively protect human life if we choose to ignore when human life begins? Would it make sense for President Bush to order the border patrol to protect our U.S. borders, and then admit that we do not know where those borders lie?
The Pope, whom we have labelled in the past with the apocalyptic term, "The Beast of Revelation," knows that human life begins at conception, but we, the "Remnant" with the "last message to a perishing world" prefer to ignore this. Does this make sense? We proclaim to the world that our attitude towards the Sabbath will eventually determine our loyalty to the Creator, yet Jesus stated in Matthew 25 that our destiny will be decided on the basis of our attitude towards the "least."
Can you think of any human beings deserving more said label than the unborn? We have used a ton of ink to emphasize the need to worship God on the correct day of the week, yet our magazines and pulpits are silent while the unborn are butchered and poisoned by physicians who were trained in the art of healing instead of killing.
You may wonder whether I am a SDA or a Catholic. I am a second generation Adventist, and I intend to remain one till I die. Nevertheless, I admire the Pope for his courage in defense of the defenseless. He may be wrong on the correct day of worship. He is also wrong on the state of the death; but he is correct on the state of the living, I believe, and on the sanctity of human life.
I think that heaven is more concerned about the slaughter of the unborn than whether we worship him on the correct day of the week. Jesus had a lot to say about how we treat others, but very little about the Sabbath, and he stated that the Sabbath was made for the sake of man, and not the reverse, which means to me that human life is more sacred than Holy Time.
Forty-five million have perished since we legalized abortion, and we are condoning this by our silence, while we publish ad nauseam about the Sabbath. Does this make sense? We have demonstrated a great concern for the health of those who have had the privilege of being allowed to be born, and we have championed the fight against the smoking habit, because by stopping the smoking habit we can add about five years to the lives of those addicted to this drug.
Have we considered that stopping abortion would add approximately 80 or 90 years to the lives of the victims of abortion instead of merely four or five extra years? Isn't it time that we did something about this? This is exactly what I am trying to this with this forum!
SDA's Silence on Abortion
by Hugo Schmidt
Do you think that our pastor is of that mindset? I suppose I had better answer my own question as the evidence is seemingly and clearly there. Cold silence! However, the more I think about what I wrote to him the more I am convinced that my suggestion for the Adventist Church to use Christmas as the best time to "defend" the unborn from conception on, in as much as the very God who could have given us a Jesus in the same way as he brought forth Adam and Eve, he chose this most humbling and yet the even more sublime way to give us Jesus through an earthly mother's womb.
As a matter of fact I consider that to be the most striking evidence that God loves us, even more forceful than the dying on the cross plus resurrection. And yet, the remnant Church has totally gone the other way, in plain English, the pagan way! I dare the Adventist Church take a worldwide survey of its members to find out if the present position by the Church would not frighten most of the members all over the world, where Adventism grows, while in the USA it is actually on hold.
Sometimes I get very low and feel like bailing out and join, in reality the true Church who believes in the sanctity of human life from conception on. I could still stay with the Sabbath and keep it holy! Yes, now we are spending 7 million to renovate this monster church building, and my question is this: For what? To keep silent while unborns are slaughtered by the thousands, even by Seventh-day Adventists for the sake of convenience?
I often think of that Sabbath when the teacher sitting in for our regular SS teacher told me that the issue of the time Jesus "spent" in the womb was for another discussion or so! Scared to death of reality! I also will never forget for your bravery by coming to my rescue, while the rest of the class remained stone faced, as it were.
Our Pastor's Silence About Abortion
by Nic Samojluk
The technical term is BS, Blind Spot. The pastor might argue that adultery is definitely wrong, but Nic rarely says anything about this. His mind is set on other things. No theologian can be totally comprehensive and totally inclusive. Each one chooses a field he wants to concentrate his attention upon.
Jesus never said anything about polygamy, but if someone had asked him, he would have, I believe. He said very little about the Sabbath, and whatever he said was not to support a strict observance of it. He rather showed by example the correct way of observing it. I do not expect every SDA theologian to campaign against abortion.
Nevertheless, it bothers me that out of the 12 million SDA's, there is hardly anybody concerned about this genocide. It bothers me to know that we have two SDA pro-abortion books in print. It bothers me to see that we spend a ton of ink trying to convince everybody that the correct day of worship is the Sabbath, but there is no interest to publish material encouraging SDA's to stay away from abortion, which is murder, and is a violation of one of the Ten Commandments.
It bothers me that we have lots of energy to help smokers quit, so they can live a few more years, but there is no SDA program designed to stop abortion, which deprives babies of their entire life span. I have sent pro-life donations to my local church and to the General Conference more than once, and my check was returned uncashed with a note saying: "We do not have a pro-life program in our chuirch." If you have any doubts, you can perform the same experiment and then tell me what happened!
The Seal of God & the Sabbath
by Nic Samojluk
I do surf other websites dealing with similar issues relating to moral values and religion. In connection with my occasional surfing of the internet, I would like to share with you the response I just filed to someone's comments about the following topic: TheSeal of God and the Sabbath.
| Quote: |
I just finished reading your comments, and I think that I agree with you. The only thing I would like to add is that "Seals" are symbols that represent something that is beyond the seal itself. A flag stands for the whole country. A presidential seal stands for the president and the office he occupies. Likewise, the Sabbath is a pointer to our special relationship with the Creator and Savior.
It means we validate God's respect for the sacredness of human life. E. G. White states that Jesus would have died for just one lost soul. My question is: Would he have died for the unborn child? Would he have stooped down to save for eternity the life of the unborn? I think he would, because he said: "Let the children come to me." How can they come to Jesus if we snuff their lives before they have a chance to take their first breath? And he stated that he did come that we might have an "Abundant Life." How can the unborn achieve an abundant life if we deprive them of life itself?
He also stated that our final destiny will not be based on whether we worship him on the correct day of the week, but rather on the way we treat the least (see Matt. 25). I have read the Gospel many times, and I do not recall a single time where he says that our final destiny will be determined by our Sabbath observance. If you know of the existence of such a text, I would like to know.
Now, do not misunderstand me on this point. I go to church on the Seventh Day; not on the First Day of the week. Nevertheless, I believe that if there is nothing behind the symbol in my life, then my religion is worthless. A sign in front of a hospital that reads 'EMERGENCY' is very helpful, but if there are no physicians and nurses staffing said emergency room, the sign is a distraction and totally worthless.

When Does Human Life Begin?
by Hugo Schmidt
It is my understanding that the Adventist Church does not officially have a position as to when human life begins in the mother's womb! Am I correct on this? So, I would like to ask someone there at Headquarters as to when did the human life begin for Jesus in the womb of Mary?
I read sometime back on the internet where a Loma Linda officer said this: Since the scientists do not know when exactly human life begins in the womb, that being the reason the Adeventist Church has refrained from speaking against abortion, which has murdered over 40 millions since Roe v Wade, in this Nation under God.
Another Loma Linda Theologian when I asked him about what he thought abortion was, he responded by saying that it is murder and that the Church should strongly speak agains it. However, he himself who has written many wonderfull books has yet to say one word in public against what he calls: murder.
Just last Sabbath afternoon I chanced to listen to Dr. James Kennedy where he very passionly pled for America to repent over the sin of abortion. He also stated categorically that life in the mother's womb begins at conception. This man and many other Christians Protestants along with the Catholic Church, strongly support the fact that the sanctity of human life begins at conception and that abortion is murder of a human being.
So my question to you at Headquarters. Are we as a Church the only Denomination at odds with the rest of the Christian world? As a 4th generation Adventist I always believed that life in the womb begins at conception, so please clarify for me this issue, as related to the life of Jesus in the womb.
If most of the Christian world is wrong on this issue, that leaves the Adventist with a great mission field responsability as it were, to teach them the truth on this issue! Right? We are the Church that claims that we are the Church that is totally biblical correct. Right?
I never thought of looking at it that way

Are We Focussing on the Sabbath to the
Exclusion of Murder?
by Nic Samojluk
I have ample evidence that most SDA's have no interest in the fate of the unborn. The latest evidence was on August 4. The event was advertised in the church bulletin and on the Redlands Facts. Approximately 40 people showed up to listen to my slide show presentation. Today a topic was advertised in the church bulletin dealing with the scientific evidence for the biblical flood and the Genesis story of creation and the auditorium was packed and they had to bring chairs from the hallway. Both events took place in the same place, but the topics were different. SDA's will do everything they can to defend the Sabbath, but won't move a finger to protect the unborn from the slaughterhouse. SDA's believe that if they can convince people that we must worship God on the correct day of the week, we will save the world, regardless of how many innocent human being we butcher in our own hospitals!
A Letter From a Catholic Viewer
of "Faith for Today"
"I cannot tell you how relieved I was to watch your program. Through the years, I have encountered several Seventh-day Adventusts and even have family members who are in your church, and I can tell you that their beliefs have greatly disturbed me.
I only watched this [series] to argue with them that Adventists are biblically incorrect. They must have misinformed me, because I was expecting very extremist views from your program. But what you preached was solidly biblical and grace-oriented. God bless you!
I truly hope with all my heart that your type of Adventism will prevail over those who believe that one must go to church on Saturday only, (and that those who choose Sunday are going to have the Mark of the Beast!), and who believe that [only] the Adventist church is the 'remnant.'
I hope that you are not anti-Catholic like so many other Adventists who call us part of the anti-Christ's church! It has caused so much hurt within the family. Please keep up the good work--keep preaching GRACE! God bless you. --Ed, a Roman Catholic! ...
